Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is planning to expand in terms of acquiring more office space. The world’s No. 1 social network is adding another smaller data centre in Prineville where it already has one centre while another is under construction.
The existing facility with an area of 334,000 square feet is already functional while another one with a similar area is coming up near that. The company plans to build another one with an area of 62,000 square feet.
However this does not mean that it will lead to more jobs, The Bulletin of Bend said on Tuesday. Employees from its bigger facilities will be deployed there. Facebook spokesman Lee Weinstein aid that the construction schedule will depend on the business needs of the company.
“Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) decides when and if to build additional structures as business needs dictate,” he said. “This building has always been on the drawing board.”
Large technology companies such as Apple, Google, Yahoo, Dell and Amazon have been acquiring space in the central part of Oregon to set up data centres for their operations. A pleasant climate, tax breaks and cheap electricity are the major attractions of this region.
Prineville’s city planners also said that Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) had discussed the possibility of another larger building though nothing was concrete as yet. Facebook is trying to reduce costs as it moves to mobile advertising where ad rates are cheaper compared to traditional display ads and web-based ads.
Shares in the company fell 5.65 percent to $20.38, though in after-hours trades it rose 1.3 percent.
